Director Biography – Daud Nugraha
Born in Yogyakarta – Indonesia, he has shown interest in the art of shadow puppets since he was little. Daud graduated from Bandung Institute of Technology majoring in Visual Communication Design, where he cultivated his love for Indonesia’s rich culture. Combining traditional and modern art has been his passion, as seen in his award-winning illustration for Indonesia’s 1001 Inspiration Design Festival’s Cover Concept. Now he is exploring a new kind of animation by blending the traditional art of shadow puppetry with modern storytelling and digital animation.
Film Director’s Statement about the Film
Since 2015, I have been incubating an idea where we could tell stories to children with shadow puppetry. Over the years, I have gained new knowledge and experience in the animation industry as a storyboard artist, hence “Aniwayang” is born. My vision is that this film would be an important milestone, not just for me but also for the Indonesian animation industry, giving us another alternative form of filmmaking, which is closer to our cultural roots yet could be as engaging and globally celebrated as modern animation.
